On industry matters
Six months have passed since forest owners took to a picket to protest against the growing burden of bureaucracy and unfair compensation for restrictions on economic activity.
Over the coming months the supplier will provide a wide range of production equipment worth several million euros so that, by the end of next year, a 15,000-square-metre plant can begin operating, creating almost 100 new jobs and producing high-value timber products mainly for export markets.
In the competition for the best doctoral thesis of 2023 organised by the journal “Forests”, the prize has been awarded to Astra Zaļuma, a researcher at LVMI “Silava”.
Surveillance cameras have been installed on eleven fire watchtowers, which will make it possible to pinpoint the location of forest fires more quickly and accurately.

On the inauguration of the LBTU rector
On 18 September, the inauguration ceremony of the rector, Professor Irina Arhipova, will take place in the Aula of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies at Jelgava Palace, where she will give the solemn rector's pledge.
On the Latvian Architecture Annual Award
The Latvian Architecture Annual Award is the highest award of national importance in Latvian architecture and is presented every year. This year the award reaches its 29th edition. The award not only highlights the finest achievements in Latvian architecture and fosters the development of the sector, but also promotes public understanding of architecture. The Latvian Architecture Annual Award is organised by the Latvian Association of Architects in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia.
On environmental matters
By becoming a “godparent”, a company undertakes to care for the site on a regular basis, meaning that at least once a year it will carry out the necessary work under specialist supervision to support biodiversity, the landscape or nature tourism. Both large companies and very small businesses with only a few employees can take part in the project by choosing a suitable site.
Birds are most active in building their nests in spring, but in some cases this can also happen in late summer, for example if a bird's intended nesting has been unsuccessful.
...a look at the statistics shows that forest areas are not shrinking. There are still grounds for concern, however, because the age structure of forest stands and forest biodiversity are changing.
Various messages and events
The grape harvest is good in many places this year and also earlier than usual, but in Vidzeme yields are lower because of the spring frosts. Although growers in this region are forecasting a lower yield, the quality of the grapes is high.
Lielauce Palace in Dobele Municipality was built in the 1820s. Only one part of the historic palace, with a Palladian window, has survived to the present day. In 1901 the palace burned down and its then owner, Count Konstantin von der Pahlen, began rebuilding work. For many years the palace was owned by what was then the Latvia University of Agriculture.
Private property is a wonderful thing! But why do some buildings look so dreadful on the outside that you want to hurry past these five to seven buildings as fast as you can!
In August a total of 1,894,005 passengers used domestic rail services in Latvia, which is 15.6% more than in August 2023 and 5.3% more than in July this year. According to “Vivi” statistics, this is also the largest number of passengers the company has managed to carry by rail in Latvia within a single month in the past 10 years.
To reach the city centre – on the left bank of the Lielupe – pedestrians can use two track crossings, which are marked by the railway staff as service crossings.
