The ecological condition of Latvia's rivers is significantly affected by various human-made alterations, namely changes to the natural flow, bed and banks of rivers, which arose mainly during the 20th century – through river regulation, the construction of land drainage systems, and the building of historic mill weirs, dams and hydroelectric power stations. delfi.lv
