The Ministry of Agriculture has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Forestry Agency of Uzbekistan's Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change. It makes it simpler to submit applications and make payments, as well as to track the status of a service request. Importantly, clients can access the portal equally conveniently from a computer, a tablet or a mobile phone.

Monitoring provides a vast amount of information that makes it possible to analyse changes in forest area and structure under a variety of tree growth and forest management conditions, to study the dynamics of timber resources, damage to stands and the volume of deadwood, as well as to keep track of the volumes of timber used by people.

The campaign highlighted several significant challenges faced both by “Rīgas meži” and by other forest owners and managers. First of these are uncoordinated, large groups of vehicles, up to ten quad bikes at a time, which leave visible and often irreversible consequences – rutted dunes, damaged habitats, frightened birds and dissatisfied forest visitors. Serious risks to the riders themselves are likewise created by hidden obstacles and hard-to-spot barriers, which are regularly found in the forest.

On 3 July, significant disruption to train services was seen on the Rīga–Jelgava railway line for more than six hours, caused by a break in the railway overhead contact line. In view of this incident, and of the fact that damage to the overhead contact line has already had a serious impact on train services on at least several occasions, the Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation.

Last year 180 more books were published than the year before, representatives of the National Library of Latvia report. In total, 2,194 books and brochures were published. That is a 9% increase, which for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic exceeds the pre-crisis level. It is also apparent that although the number of books is growing, their print runs keep shrinking. Last year the total print run of books fell by 4%, reaching 2.1 million copies.
