Europe's forest owners and managers are expressing their support for the member state experts as they await further guidance from the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Council on the next steps regarding the proposals for an EU regulation on establishing a resilient European forest monitoring framework.

 

The state budget is also under threat; the finance minister has called it “very tightly stretched”, while experts are already describing it as optimistic. That means insufficient funding for defence, healthcare and education.

 

 

 

Mire ecosystem restoration measures on such a scale will be carried out within a single project in Latvia for the first time. We will undertake practical work across at least 1,500 hectares, though a larger area will benefit overall.

 

The barbastelle is a rare bat species that hibernates in Latvia and is here at the north-eastern edge of its range. It uses a variety of roosts and habitats that may lie considerable distances apart. The Latvian population is estimated at around 200-500 individuals, and most of the recorded sites lie outside the existing Natura 2000 network of specially protected nature territories.

 

Invasive freshwater species have also been recorded in protected nature territories. Monitoring of rivers and lakes at various locations in Latvia has turned up spiny-cheek crayfish as well as invasive fish and molluscs.

 

No one has asked the people of Latvia what they want to see in the future, what they need to improve their quality of life. Latvian society needs to be informed and educated about the agricultural sector and its development from the restoration of independence to the present day. Looking at the trend over recent years, it is clear that since 2019 the number of households in Latvia that count themselves as middle class or well-off has gradually fallen (down by four percentage points), while more households count themselves as poor (up by three percentage points).

 

The Latvian state owns more than 60 different capital companies in total. Measured against the size of our relatively small economy, that is more than the average in other developed countries. There is therefore scope to reduce the number of these companies.

Decarbonising transport will require not only changing the vehicle fleet but also turning to green fuel production in Latvia; at the same time a rise in energy prices is inevitable, and Social Climate Fund resources can be used to cushion it for the less well-off.

 

Investment in developing the territory of the Freeport of Rīga is planned along the following lines – construction of utility networks, increasing network capacity, creating access roads and a level crossing within the port territory, building higher load-bearing deep-water berths, building new logistics infrastructure or reconstructing existing logistics infrastructure, rebuilding and constructing bank reinforcements, as well as dredging the seabed in the water area and reinforcing the shoreline.

 

 

Academician Baiba Rivža, tenured professor and leading researcher at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, was re-elected Secretary General of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

 

The six-year project brings together interdisciplinary methods to study historical pandemics and their impact in Europe. Palaeoecological research on the Baltic region, led by Normunds Stivriņš, professor at the Department of Geography of the University of Latvia's Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, will provide new insights into interactions between people and nature in the context of historical pandemics, helping to better understand how pandemics unfolded and what they left behind.

 

 

By the State Forest Service's estimate there are around 1,300 wolves in Latvia; here this is a protected species that may be hunted only in strictly set numbers – 300 animals from 15 July until the limit is reached, but no later than 31 March.
