On 22 July 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers approved amendments put forward by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development to Cabinet Regulation No. 674 of 21 November 2023, “Regulations on Nature Reserves”, extending the protected areas by more than 4,300 ha. These amendments were adopted in order to partly resolve the infringement procedure launched by the European Commission against Latvia over the failure to meet the requirements of the Habitats Directive.
