As part of the skills competition, young people from European countries will demonstrate their abilities in forest regeneration and tending in the forest owned by the Ministry of Education and Science and entrusted to Ogre Technical School in Birzgale parish, Ogre municipality, while their skill and dexterity with a chainsaw will be on show at the year’s grandest forest awareness event, “Latvian Forest Days”.ovt.lv

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, is organising an international expert seminar in Riga from 26 to 28 May entitled “Forestry for the future: bringing stakeholders together for climate policy and sustainable growth”.zm.gov.lv

If the weather in Latvia remains changeable, damage from the European spruce bark beetle may not be significant in Latvia this year, Agnis Šmits, lead researcher at the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, told the LETA news agency.aprinkis.lv

Using local solutions for the first time, construction of 16 wind turbines has begun on former peat extraction fields at SIA “Laflora”’s Kaigu bog in Jelgava municipality. Electricity generation will begin in the summer of 2026. This will be the largest wind farm in Latvia to date, with an installed capacity of 108.8 MW. Half of the investment – around 95 million euros – is being channelled into the Latvian economy through orders placed with national companies.

Hunting

During the meeting, the parties agreed that the most appropriate solution in the circumstances is not amendments to Cabinet of Ministers regulations, but rather meaningful solutions for regulating animal populations, developed jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture and non-governmental organisations, which could be introduced as early as the start of this year’s hunting season.zm.gov.lv

When game animals multiply excessively, they cause considerable damage to forest stands, which has a significant impact on the quality, vitality and economic value of the future forest. That is why one of the most effective ways to protect forest stands and reduce damage by animals is to regulate their numbers, in other words, hunting.lvm.lv

To reduce the damage caused by geese to agriculture during the spring migration, the Nature Conservation Agency (the Agency) is for the sixth year issuing farmers permits to scare geese away, that is, for a limited take of geese. Over the past three years the number of permits requested has been falling.daba.gov.lv

For most of Latvian society nature is a value, and people feel it is important to protect nature and care for it, yet they do not actively get involved in nature conservation. Public knowledge about nature has also declined over the years.daba.gov.lv

Dūmiņu bog is one of the greatest assets of the “Raķupes ieleja” nature reserve. Several decades ago Dūmiņu bog was partially drained – a number of drainage ditches were dug as far back as the pre-war years. The raised bog habitats of Dūmiņu bog are most affected by ditches that carry water away from the western part of the bog, causing the water level in the bog to drop.lvm.lv

The State Forest Service urges the public to be observant and to report immediately any other animal species not typical of Latvia’s fauna.vmd.gov.lv

The VAAD urges buyers to check very carefully, before purchasing planting stock, where it comes from and whether plant passports are present. Let us not take risks and let us not allow dangerous plant diseases and pests to spread in Latvia! The aim of the draft air protection law is to protect the environment and human health from air pollution. The new law is being drawn up by the Ministry of Climate and Energy, incorporating the requirements of several European Union legal acts. At present it is only under consultation and has not been submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers.lsm.lv
