Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze, Head of the Latvian Organic Agriculture Association (LBLA) Gustavs Norkārklis, and Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Rural Consultation and Education Centre (LLKC) Mārtiņš Cimermanis have signed the Organic Agriculture Development Action Plan for 2023-2030.

The Cabinet of Ministers (MK) approved amendments to regulations drafted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development. These amendments aim to update the list of water bodies included in MK regulations that are at risk of failing to achieve good ecological status by 2027 if the pressure on these water bodies does not decrease or if additional pressure causes the current status to deteriorate.
The purpose of the platform is to provide a user-friendly public services portal between European Union member states. For instance, in the event of a change of residence, a user can use the platform to select relevant services and complete them in one place, such as applying for university studies, diploma recognition, etc.

JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) encourages young people to consider whether their future lies in trees by participating in the “LVM Bioeconomy School” scholarship competition. By 31 January next year, high school students must research the diverse role of wood in the bioeconomy and submit a poster on the topic for a chance to go on a bioeconomy expedition and win scholarships.

In response to an appeal from the Ukrainian Embassy in Latvia, JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) will donate 468 used computer units in good working order, valued at nearly 32,000 euros, to children living in Ukraine.

The “Export and Innovation Award 2023” is the highest state award in entrepreneurship. We are proud that this year the main award – the Export Champion – was presented to “Latvijas Finieris”. In 2022, the company increased its export turnover by 27%, contributing to economic development, fostering further company growth, and providing stable jobs.

On 20 December, the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU) announced an international competition for the position of rector. The advertisement, detailing the requirements for candidates, has been published in the official gazette Latvijas Vēstnesis, as well as on the university's website. Ministers criticised the situation where rail passenger transport between Riga and Vilnius is provided by a Lithuanian company rather than Latvia's Pasažieru vilciens. On Tuesday, the government heard information provided by the Ministry of Transport regarding the model for organising public transport services on domestic regional railway routes.

For the preservation of habitats, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM) is prepared to go for the maximum scenario, i.e., to increase the territories of all European Union (EU) significance habitats to the permissible area. Meanwhile, identifying a habitat does not prevent economic activity in the forest, while legal decisions on which of the counted habitats to include in protected areas and how to do so have not yet been made.
Hundreds of wolves pulling wolves
With the culling of 300 wolves on 15 December 2023, the 2023/2024 wolf hunting season has ended. 300 wolves was the permissible cull quota set for this season by the State Forest Service.

The necessary preparatory work for starting the construction of the Rail Baltica main line has been completed – real estate is available, funding for the first phase of construction is secured, the construction project is ready, as well as an internationally recognised and experienced construction supervisor and contractor. Currently, the southern section towards Lithuania is the most technically ready and strategically important for establishing a connection with Europe as quickly as possible, and this is where the first construction works will begin.

The genus Araucaria includes about 20 species; the Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is available in shops. Another relative, the monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), is the national tree of Chile. When mature, it resembles a palm tree.
