“Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) has begun the process of selling energy wood chips for the 2025/2026 heating season. In the sales procedure, LVM is offering 650,000 loose m³ of energy wood chips across the whole territory of Latvia, from which more than 550 thousand megawatt hours of thermal energy can be produced.

The Austrian wood-processing holding company HS Timber Group GmbH (HS Timber) plans to acquire the Latvian wood-processing company SIA Kurekss. This was announced by the Competition Council (KP), which is assessing the Austrian company's notification of the acquisition of decisive influence over Kurekss.

Because of the geopolitical situation, money in Latvia is needed for national defence. Savings must be sought not only in the ministries' purses, but also in state-owned enterprises. The solution is to reform those enterprises. “Latvijas valsts meži” must also be managed more efficiently; by its own calculations, it has paid more than 2.1 billion euros into the state budget over 25 years.

After Azerbaijan's competent food supervision authority recognised the food chain supervision carried out by the Food and Veterinary Service as effective and comparable to Azerbaijani standards, 48 Latvian producers of food of animal origin have been included in the list of establishments approved for export.

On 18 March, the Cabinet of Ministers approved amendments to three sets of regulations relating to state budget and EU fund support, broadening the options for crediting support payments to beneficiaries' payment accounts. In future, beneficiaries will have wider scope to receive state and EU support payments into payment accounts opened with other providers referred to in the Law on Payment Services and Electronic Money as well, for example electronic money institutions, payment institutions and the like.

A new eco-scheme has been introduced in the regulations for the creation and preservation of landscape features. In future, farmers will be able to receive support for all hectares of arable land on their holding if landscape features occupy at least 1% of that area: biodiversity islands, stone piles, ponds, trees, clumps of trees or shrubs, rows of trees, protected trees, boulders or avenues.

In 2024, the beetle research group at Daugavpils University discovered and described 111 beetle species new to science, 7 new genera and one subgenus. Two of the new genera described and ten of the new species are fossils that no longer occur today and were discovered in inclusions in Baltic amber.

In order to preserve the rare, protected grey dunes of Slītere National Park and Latvia as a whole, and at the same time the diverse coastal landscape, the Nature Conservation Agency has begun dune restoration work in Kolka, by the car park of the Priežu nature trail and the birdwatching tower.

In them, the Latvia University of Biosciences and Technologies, known internationally as Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, takes 401st-475th place out of 1744 universities worldwide.

Public administration spending must be cut by at least 850 million euros, and that money must be redirected to national defence, according to the Employers' Confederation of Latvia, which has put an action programme to the government on reducing public sector expenditure, improving efficiency and cutting red tape.
