Work has begun on preparing a new nature protection plan for the Beberbeķi Nature Park in Mārupe Municipality. It will determine how this unique area is managed and developed over the next twelve years.

The first information meeting will take place on 30 October 2025 at 6.00 p.m. at the Skulte day centre (Skultes iela 31, Skulte, Mārupe Municipality). It will also be possible to join the meeting online. We invite residents and all other interested parties to get involved and find out about the planned activities, as well as to put forward proposals and ideas.

The Beberbeķi Nature Park is located in Mārupe Municipality, was established in 1977 and covers 268 ha. Since 2004 the park has been included in Natura 2000, the European network of protected natural areas. The park was created to preserve biologically valuable pine forests and dune landscapes, which are important for Latvia's natural diversity. Five types of forest habitat of European importance are found in the park. Protected species live here – the black woodpecker, the red-breasted flycatcher and the otter. Beberbeķi Lake and the surrounding forests are also a popular place for walks and recreation for the residents of Mārupe and Rīga.

The new plan – for the needs of both people and nature

The park's previous protection plan ran from 2003 to 2013, so a new approach is now needed. The new plan will set out:

·        measures for conserving and managing natural assets,

·        the control of invasive species,

·        proposals for improving infrastructure,

·        balanced development of environmental, social and economic interests.

"This is the moment when everyone can get involved and help shape a vision for the future of the nature park – so that it is preserved both as a biologically valuable area and as a much-loved place for recreation," emphasises Kristīne Vilciņa, representative of the environmental solutions company Ecosoul and head of the development of this nature protection plan.
