The buffer zone in Cyprus, also known as the Green Line, is a demilitarised zone patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force. First established in 1964 and expanded in 1974 following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the strip of uninhabited agricultural land covers approximately three per cent of the island, roughly 346 square kilometres. The purpose of this zone is simple: to separate the opposing Greek and Turkish military forces and prevent the resumption of hostilities.

This part of Cyprus has been effectively abandoned since 1974; there is no human impact here, as a result of which the habitat and vegetation are developing - literally - thriving and flourishing. In fact, animals, plants and other living organisms in this abandoned strip are healthier and developing in a much more balanced way.
