Now that a "green" coalition is in power at Riga City Council, trees are being destroyed during construction work – instead of the city's green mantle being protected. I am convinced that the cycle path could have been built on the other side of Vienības gatve – that is, where there are no trees, yet plenty of space where there would have been room for a cycle path. But now the contractors are literally "tearing up" the green zone – right between two rows of chestnut trees, just 30 centimetres from the trunks! Will they plant trees in Torņkalns to replace the felled chestnut and other trees? Furthermore, why could the work not have been carried out using so-called air spades, which would not damage the tree roots? How right was it to damage the tree roots ahead of winter and expose them before the frosts? This is not good for the trees, but the big bosses do not think about that…
