The bedrock in the territory of Finland is truly very old, dating back 1800-2800 million years. However, the history of wildlife in the Nordic countries can, by comparison, be viewed over a much shorter time period. About 20,000 years ago, the entire territory of present-day Finland was covered by an ice sheet several kilometres thick. In the period 10-13 thousand years ago, the ice began to melt, with life returning to the territory of Finland, starting from the east and south-east.
