The European Union arrived at the aforementioned summit with its own plans and goals. A couple of days before the summit, the relevant ministers, following 14 hours of negotiations and at five o'clock in the morning, agreed to a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to the levels seen in 1990.
Latvia is a model pupil in this regard. In 2017, the year of the last available data, our country was responsible for only 0.02% of global greenhouse gas emissions. We have vast forests, as well as power plants on the Daugava (and on smaller rivers, which for many years has led to political clashes regarding the mandatory procurement component).
We are not a significant part of the causes behind climate change. However, Latvia too is forced to live with the conditions brought about by climate change.
