For quite some time now, a special programme has been operating in Russia with the aim of finding and preserving exceptional, old, long-lived trees that are equally valuable in terms of their historical, natural and cultural significance. Over time, a National Register of Old-Growth Trees (https://treeportal.ru/index.php) has been established in our neighbouring country.
Over 10 years of operation, more than a thousand applications containing descriptions of trees have been received from various corners of the Russian Federation. Based on expert assessments, 536 trees have been included in the register, of which 216 have been designated as a 'Tree – a Monument of Living Nature'.
