Too many reasons for bad news

Covid-19, the war in Ukraine, mass shootings, inflation and more, and more. Sometimes it feels like there is no end to the bad news, and it can negatively impact people's mental wellbeing. An increasing number of people are actively trying to avoid the news or at least limit their exposure to it.

According to the latest Reuters Institute Digital News Report (Digital News Report), an average of 38% of respondents from over 40 countries indicated that they sometimes or quite often avoid the news, which is significantly more than in 2017, when the figure was 27%. As shown in the chart, selective news avoidance, as Reuters calls it, has become more common across all markets, with Brazilians most likely to be intentionally reducing their news consumption.
