To protect the forest stand, diseased pines in part of Bolderāja forest will be felled

To protect the surrounding forests from potential decay, to limit the spread of root rot as much as possible, and to maintain the viability of the forest, SIA “Rīgas meži” will fell diseased pines in a part of the Bolderāja forest.

Sanitary selective felling will take place in the forest stand near the Bolderāja New Cemetery – between Liela iela, Kleistu iela and Maza Kleistu iela, in accordance with the State Forest Service (VMD) sanitary assessment no. 177562 (VMD felling permit no. 1660080). Work is scheduled to begin in mid-February.

Disease containment and protection of the surrounding forest stand must be carried out during the autumn-winter season, when the temperature is below 0 °C or close to it. In warmer weather, root rot, which is a fungal disease, “migrates” from felled infected trees to the healthy parts of the forest stand via spores.

Objectives of the work:

–        to limit the further spread of root rot,

–        to prevent the death of the forest stand,

–        to maintain the forest's viability.

Type of work: sanitary selective felling – the removal of diseased and potentially diseased trees.

Planned timing of work: winter 2024 (scheduled to start in mid-February).

Area of work: approximately 16 ha (compartment 21).

Planned sequence of work: maintenance of roads according to transport needs; clearing of undergrowth; tree felling and extraction of materials; removal of branches and logging residues; road restoration. Work may take place simultaneously, gradually, or may be temporarily suspended due to unsuitable weather conditions.

Visitors to the area are asked to observe movement restrictions during the works and not to approach machinery!
