The Forest Owners Association of Latvia (LMĪB) is launching an eagle-owl protection project in private forests this year, within the framework of which 37 platforms for eagle-owl nesting will be installed. The eagle-owl is the largest owl species in Latvia and Europe, and experts estimate that there are between 8 and 73 breeding pairs in Latvia.
As project manager Juris Zalmanis informs, members of the LMĪB – both private individuals and legal entities – applied to participate, offering their forest properties for the installation of the platforms. The project's geographical coverage is quite extensive, with Kurzeme, Latgale, and Vidzeme all being represented. All sites are located in forest stands where an eagle-owl could potentially nest, in accordance with the priority areas for the eagle-owl set out in the Owl Species Protection Plan.
