There will be enough grain for both processing and export

The question of this year's grain harvest became particularly urgent following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February this year. In response, the European Union imposed sanctions on the supply of mineral fertilisers from Russia, complicating their availability for our farmers. In the spring months, this caused great uncertainty for farmers. However, now that the first hectares have been harvested, it is quite safe to say that the grain harvest will be good. The question is one of grain quality and which quality category they will fall into. Therefore, in Latvia, it is not a question of whether we will have enough grain. As in other years, the grain harvest is good, and this will allow us to both ensure grain processing and domestic consumption in full, as well as have enough for export. (...)

The significant increase in feed prices has had a particularly major impact, as Latvian farmers purchased it from Ukraine. But under current war conditions, this is no longer possible. Meanwhile, vegetable growing in greenhouses has been affected by the dramatically increased price of natural gas, which is used for heating greenhouses. Uncertainty about whether and what support will be available has resulted in fewer vegetables grown in covered areas being available in shops, but this support will help keep their price stable.
