Labour shortage in forests. All hope pinned on technology

Just over a year ago, Latvijas valsts meži published a notice seeking to procure mechanised planting services – six excavators equipped with planting heads capable of carrying out planting work. Yes, they would replace manual labour. We did not, of course, state that in the notice. We used every possible communication channel to find suitable applicants, including social media. Well, go ahead! Come and work! In reality, fulfilling forestry plans is becoming increasingly difficult due to a lack of human resources. On one hand, we fear that technology will take away jobs. On the other – the harsh reality – there is a labour shortage in forestry, and the future holds no promise of improvement in this regard. The only solution is technology, and here there are indeed quite extensive possibilities.
