It may surprise many that the world's largest used tyre dump is located in Kuwait. Across an area of six acres (just under 2.5 hectares), approximately 6 million tyres are stored. When viewed from space, large holes in the desert sand are visible, literally packed with tyres. Now, they have caught fire.
The toxic smoke seen in the article's header image is, unfortunately, an annual occurrence. Curiously, the wind usually disperses the smoke towards the sea, with it barely affecting the inland areas. One can only wonder and speculate why such flammable and hazardous material is kept and accumulated in a place where temperatures often exceed +50 C...
