On 23 January 2022, the 2021/2022 wolf hunting season concluded with the culling of 280 wolves. 280 wolves was the permissible hunting limit set for this season by the State Forest Service.

The State Forest Service (VMD) determines the permissible wolf hunting limit each year. In Latvia, the wolf is a specially protected, limited-use species that may be hunted in strictly defined numbers, while simultaneously maintaining a favourable status for the wolf population.

The hunting season establishes a permissible limit for wolf culling that does not threaten the regeneration of the species' population, while simultaneously providing hunters with the opportunity to reduce the risk of damage caused by predator concentration and changes in their behaviour to agriculture.

This season, the highest number of wolves, 53 animals, were culled in the Austrumlatgale forest district, followed by the Ziemeļkurzeme forest district with 47 wolves and the Zemgale forest district with 39 wolves. The fewest wolves, 5 animals, were culled in the Riga regional forest district.

Hunting regulations specify that wolves may be hunted during the hunting season from 15 July until the defined hunting limit is reached, but no later than 31 March. The previous year, the wolf hunting season concluded on 22 January.
