Taking into account past and present forest management ("climate-smart" forestry), the biological growth of forests regularly exceeds sustainable harvesting. Forests are a significant carbon sink, absorbing CO2 in a "growing and well-managed storage facility". Furthermore, the timber harvested from the forest is chosen to replace large volumes of fossil-based raw materials in construction, packaging and energy sectors.
