US Army develops climate strategy aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050

On 8 February, the US Army released its climate strategy, which includes targets to reduce GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The Army plans a series of measures to achieve these goals, such as increasing fuel efficiency, electrifying army vehicles, modernising energy generation, land use, and stabilising supply chains.

Such activities began in the Department of Defense when its new head (Lloyd Austin) took office. As early as January 2021, it was reported that the department needed to "take swift and decisive action to identify and prioritise climate goals." The statement also noted: "Climate change is a known threat to US security, and it is altering the geopolitical landscape we have become accustomed to viewing as stable. Today, soldiers have to operate in high temperatures, fight forest fires, and assist in recovery from hurricanes. This shows that for neither a soldier nor anyone else is climate change 'something in the distant future'; it is happening today."
