Over the course of three years, several Latvian institutions have collaborated on a study to determine the prevalence and progression of acute oak decline in Latvia. A total of 28 trees affected by acute oak decline have been identified in Latvia. Specialists do not recommend felling or removing the infected trees, but rather continuing to monitor the development of the disease.
In 2017, the presence of two bacteria (Gibbsiella quercinecans and Brenneria goodwinii), which cause acute oak decline, was confirmed in oaks in the Talsi Highlands for the first time in Latvia via laboratory testing.
In recent years, cases of oak disease with symptoms characteristic of acute oak decline (dead branches, crown defoliation, stem damage, and bleeding lesions) have been identified in several European countries, though the disease has only been confirmed in laboratory settings in Great Britain, Switzerland, and Poland. The disease is most widespread among oak trees in Great Britain.
