Latvia, as well as Lithuania and Estonia, currently have some of the strictest conditions in the anti-money laundering (AML) sector in Europe. Unfortunately, this also means that there are clients who have to go through very complex processes, even if they have nothing to do with AML risks. This makes the Baltic financial system slightly less efficient. A risk-based approach is something that is easy to say, but much harder to implement. Therefore, a major question is how the Baltic states can continue on the well-started path when it comes to the smoothness and efficiency of processes.
