This year, the calendar featuring 12 outstanding Latvian scientists includes a story about Dr. silv. Āris Jansons, Associate Professor at the LLU Faculty of Forestry Department of Silviculture and lead researcher at the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”. His research specialisation is linked to forest breeding and the adaptation of woody plants.

Ā. Jansons mentions carbon sequestration in old-growth stands, which are 160–180 years old, as one of his most significant research areas. The scientist explains that it is currently important to build an understanding of how to sequester carbon most effectively in the forest. In connection with climate-neutral policy, old forest stands are viewed as places where biodiversity can be preserved; however, this approach must also be balanced with economic needs and the bioeconomy.
