It has been 20 years since the last Spix's macaw was seen in the wild, but this almost extinct species could potentially return to its native Brazilian forests.

After some time, thanks to a special breeding and restoration programme, the birds will return to the Caatinga reserve in north-eastern Brazil.

The Spix's macaw is one of the rarest birds in the world; a small parrot with blue feathers. Illegal trade, hunting and the destruction of natural habitats for agriculture have had severe consequences and led to the species disappearing from the wild. (...)
