We must not allow the reimposition of a bankrupt timber trading model

Only at a superficial glance might the way in which the largest forest owner, AS "Latvijas valsts meži", sells timber in Latvia be a matter of indifference to forest harvesters and providers of roundwood transport and woodchip production services. It may seem that loggers will have to prepare and deliver timber regardless, so there is no need to worry about lowering standards. However, that is not entirely the case. Companies in the sector have witnessed various types of crises more than once – from the bursting of economic bubbles and disasters caused by natural phenomena to the current consequences of the pandemic. We have concluded that our sector's ability to overcome all these challenges is inextricably linked to the "biological diversity" of local processing companies – their regional coverage, the variety of products manufactured and sales markets, and differences in the scale of companies. Quite simply, when things go worse for some, they go better for others, and vice versa. This balance has ensured gradual and stable growth.
