Study co-author Gilad Bino believes that biologists have "missed" the decline in the platypus population because, at some point "in the past", these animals were considered relatively widespread and common. As time passed, even scientists "forgot" how many there were in total, simply assuming that their numbers had not changed significantly. (In ecology, this is called shifting baseline syndrome)
