To encourage waste sorting, the company Clean R launched a "Sort BIO" competition in the spring, inviting residents in the company's service zones in Riga – the Kurzeme and Latgale districts and the centre – to sort their organic waste. The competition ran for three months; the winners, the residents of 8 Zeltiņu Street, are now being ceremoniously honoured.

Clean R has installed just over 400 organic waste bins. The company's board member Guntars Levics noted that the number of containers will increase. They hope to have a total of a thousand containers in place by the autumn.

Organic waste sorting has been available for about a year. We have estimated that by sorting waste, costs can be reduced by approximately 40%. For example, if an apartment building pays 200 euros a month for waste collection, by starting to sort, it could reduce its expenses by almost 50%, which would amount to around 1000 euros a year.
