Opening of “Latvijas Finieris” new veneer mill, “Kuldīgas fabrika”

“Kuldīgas fabrika” is located in Kuldīga, at Ganību iela 12 – on a site where the “Latvijas Finieris” timber yard has already been operating for several years.

After a year of construction, and an investment of around 16 million euros in the production building, equipment, technology and site improvements, the new veneer peeling mill – “Kuldīgas fabrika” – has been completed.

The mill, with its unique equipment, marks a significant turning point not only in wood processing but also in the planning of forestry work. The world's first machine of its kind – a hybrid peeling lathe – built for the needs of “Latvijas Finieris”, makes it possible to experiment with smaller-diameter roundwood assortments that were previously sent mainly for export or processed into lower value-added products. In time, this will deliver higher productivity from every hectare of Latvia's fertile land that is used for purposeful forestry.

The new mill will run two shifts, in time providing work for up to 30 specialists, as well as for a range of local outsourced service providers.

Kuldīga was not chosen as a destination for development and investment by chance. The economic growth potential of the Kurzeme region and its strong woodworking traditions, together with the availability of resources, were the reasons why the company decided at the time to set up a veneer log reception yard here, while already planning future development scenarios.

For now, the peeled veneer from the Kuldīga mill will partly supply the raw material for plywood production at the “Lignums” factory. As “Latvijas Finieris” continues to expand the “Verems” factory in Rēzekne, it is planned that within a year to a year and a half the Kuldīga mill will switch entirely to supplying raw material solely to the “Furniers” factory in Rīga
