Unveiling of a memorial to the national partisan war in the forests of Kabile

On 15 September, a memorial site dedicated to the national partisan war was unveiled in the forest between Renda and Kabile, created as a result of several years of diligent work by members of the Rubeņa fonds foundation.

“The location for the memorial ensemble was determined by the nearby site of the Āpuznieki battle on 1 January 1946, where national partisans of the Kabile group repelled an attack by numerically superior Cheka military units and inflicted heavy losses upon them. Today, the ancient battle is marked by the graves of two fallen partisans – Emīls Šmits and Ādolfs Kūrējs – and the 'crooked pine', which, according to the fighters' memories, was the location of the group's western outpost.

With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Defence, several private individuals, and the hands of many diligent volunteers and craftsmen, a gallery of information boards about the history of the National Resistance Movement has been created in the forest, along with a partisan-style lean-to shelter, a summer classroom for lessons, and a memorial wall featuring the names of 294 LNPA 'Kurzeme' fighters engraved on oak plaques.”
