The Northern Transport Corridor – a solution to Riga's problems or a "dead horse" in infrastructure plans?

What is the Northern Corridor?

For decades, the Riga Northern Transport Corridor has been considered the biggest transport infrastructure project in Riga, even though there is currently active construction work under way in the capital related to the largest infrastructure project in the entire Baltic region – the creation of the "Rail Baltica" railway.

The Northern Transport Corridor project would connect the Port of Riga and the city of Riga with the "Via Baltica" highway. The 30-kilometre-long road would cross the entire capital.

It is planned that in the west, the Northern Corridor would connect to the Riga bypass near Babīte and provide a convenient link to the Riga–Jūrmala–Ventspils highway, and in the east – to the Vidzeme motorway in Berģi. The Northern Corridor would be integrated into Riga's main street system with 9-12 multi-level junctions. The road would also cross the roughly 400-metre-wide Daugava river.

Previous reports in the media indicated that the project costs would amount to more than one and a half billion euros, but it must be taken into account that such figures were forecast several years ago.
