The inlet and outlet ends of the arched culvert have been rebuilt, and the so-called "wings" that help support the embankment structure have been concreted. The decorative masonry at the inlet and outlet ends has also been restored, and the waterproofing has been renewed.
"There are three other similar culverts on the Vidzeme highway – Kaķupīte, Līgatne and Lejasgrāvis – which were built in the mid-19th century. The culverts were constructed at the same time as the Riga–Pskov road. All the culverts are designed as brick masonry vaults with hewn granite block supports and retaining walls and are historic, beautiful architectural structures that should be preserved as industrial heritage for future generations. Of the identified culverts of this type, the Lejasgrāvis culvert still needs to be restored, which could take place in 2024," said Māris Dūzelis, Head of the LVC Bridge Department.
