If all checks are successfully completed, NASA will set an official launch date for the Artemis I lunar mission (currently scheduled for no earlier than May 2022). Artemis I is an uncrewed rocket intended to fly in a vast arc thousands of miles beyond the Moon and return to Earth after approximately three weeks. The next part of the mission, Artemis II, will carry a rocket crew past the Moon, while the final stage of the programme, Artemis III, aims to land humans on the lunar surface for the first time since Apollo 17 visited Earth's satellite in 1972.
