Plans to invest in six municipalities stall Latvijas valsts meži donations to culture, sport and charity

The preliminary profit of the state-owned joint-stock company Latvijas valsts meži last year was 240 million euros. The Ministry of Agriculture had intended to pay out record-breaking donations from this large profit to sport, Ukrainian refugees, and six municipalities led by the National Alliance and the United List. The new government did not grant approval, thereby also halting the donations that charity, cultural and sports organisations had been counting on. The money will now go to the state treasury, and the government and the Saeima will decide on its recipients during the budget process.

Planned donations by Latvijas valsts meži in 2022:

For the promotion of cultural and artistic development 1,180,000;
For the promotion of sports development 3,749,211;
For the promotion of educational and scientific development 1,100,000;
For the promotion of social assistance 3,458,639.

Almost 1.2 million euros were earmarked for the State Culture Capital Foundation. 300,000 of this money was designated for the creation of the historical film about legionnaires titled “Neredzamais cietoksnis” (The Invisible Fortress), while another 300,000 was a targeted donation for choirs and dance ensembles.

In addition to traditional support for large associations, about 400,000 was planned for sports. This included the roof replacement for an athletics indoor arena, 200,000 for Loginovs' Sailing Union, and 300,000 for Kisiels' Automobile Federation.

In addition to the usual 800,000 for the Forest Development Fund, another 300,000 was set to be paid for improving the infrastructure of the Faculty of Forestry at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies.

As in previous years, Latvijas valsts meži planned to pay around 400,000 to the foundation Ziedot.lv for the implementation of various goals, another 200,000 for the support of Ukrainian refugees, and a larger sum was also allocated to the Latvian Children's Fund.
