The Estonian Environment Agency notes in its report that timber stocks in commercial forests exceed harvest volumes (2019). Forests cover about half of Estonia's territory, with forest cover estimated at around 61% on the island of Hiiumaa and in the Ida-Viru region.
Timber reserves in Estonia reached 16.1 million m3 in 2021, of which 75% consist of pine, spruce and birch.
The area of protected forests has increased to 25.6%, including a rise in the share of strictly protected forests from ~10% ten years ago to 14.2%.
