Forest Comes to Jelgava 2019

The LLU Faculty of Forest, in cooperation with industry organisations and companies, is organising the event “Forest Comes to Jelgava 2019” as part of “Forest Days 2019”.

Purpose of the event: by involving forestry organisations and companies, to educate the public about forest management, its importance in increasing forest productivity and value, the potential for wood utilisation in ensuring a high level of public welfare, as well as the growth of the Latvian state and economy; furthermore, to demonstrate in practice that forest management is not just tree felling, but a complex of activities that ensures sustainable forest management and the timber industry in Latvia.

Event time: 17.04.2019. from 10:00 to 17:00.

Venue: Jelgava, Pasta sala

During the event, interested parties (students, school youth, pupils of pre-school educational institutions, city residents and visitors) will be introduced to the forest management cycle - soil preparation and forest regeneration, the necessity of maintenance, the products obtained during forest utilisation (assortments, energy wood), as well as the further processing of wood products – energy wood, sawn timber, wooden products and construction. In parallel, a tradition of creating wooden sculptures will be established this year within the framework of the event, and the Zemgale Region Hunting Trophy Exhibition will be on display in the Faculty of Forest hall (Akadēmijas ielā 11) from 17.04. to 03.05.

During the event, forestry machinery, a soil preparation tiller, fire protection equipment and vehicles, a wood chipper, a log splitter, a band saw, and small-scale woodworking equipment will be demonstrated. Throughout the day, there will be demonstrations of various equipment and tools, as well as opportunities to try working with them, participate in sawing competitions, and test skills on harvester and forwarder simulators. Arborists will also demonstrate their skills.

Educational stands will provide information about forest regeneration, the necessity of maintenance, and the assortment yield from pine and birch trunks. Interested parties will have the opportunity to see how sawn timber is made from logs and learn about the possibilities of using wood in both construction and the production of various goods. On the day of the event, attractive demonstrations will take place in the field of bioenergy using various wood products, burning wood chips, pellets, and briquettes.
