According to a reader of the magazine Medības, a trail camera in Latgale, not far from the Russian border, has captured an image of an animal that to all appearances is a raccoon (Procyon lotor). Until now, no raccoon has been officially recorded in the wild in Latvia, and this sighting could be the first evidence that the invasive species is beginning to move into our territory as well.

The raccoon is officially recognised in the European Union as an invasive species that poses a significant threat to native wildlife. It is an adaptable, highly mobile animal that can seriously affect local bird populations, destroy nests, spread diseases (rabies, for example) and compete with native species for food and territory.

In Lithuania, raccoon numbers have risen sharply in recent years, and there the species is already putting considerable pressure on the local ecosystem. If raccoons become established in Latvia too, similar problems can be expected. That is why a sighting like this matters so much. Possible raccoon sightings should be reported to the State Forest Service. The easiest way to do so is through the Mednis app, which allows you to record the sighting quickly and pass the information on to the responsible authorities.

There is no reason to hesitate about reporting – this information is crucial for identifying and controlling the arrival of a new invasive species at the earliest stage.

This raccoon may be only the beginning. If we act in good time, it may be possible to prevent the species from spreading further and to protect Latvia's natural environment.
