On 27 February, the European Parliament will vote on the text of the Nature Restoration Regulation, which was agreed upon last year during trilogue negotiations by the European Parliament and Council negotiating teams. Following the European Parliament vote, the Regulation will also be approved by the European Council.

The 2023 agreement between the European Parliament and the Council on the Nature Restoration Law is a positive step towards the restoration and recovery of habitats currently in a critical state.

During the lengthy negotiation process, a number of legal measures previously included in the regulation that were considered burdensome were removed. The text of the Regulation is now considered a minimum requirement that allows for the restoration of nature. Failure to adopt the Regulation would be seen as a serious setback.

Its successful implementation will depend on strong political support and the backing of all those living in rural areas and stakeholders, including farmers, landowners, foresters, anglers and hunters, whose collective action can turn Brussels policy into successful local initiatives.

Through its Biodiversity Manifesto, FACE has compiled hundreds of small-scale nature restoration projects led by local hunters. It is vital to recognise the significant progress already achieved thanks to the dedicated work of hunters across the EU. The Nature Restoration Regulation provides an opportunity to scale up this work through national-level planning and resources.
