This week, FACE officially presented the collated results of the SignforHunting campaign to European Commissioner for the Environment Virginijus Sinkevičius. This campaign is a call for legislators to work together (collaborate) with European hunters and to better understand, explain, and acknowledge the contribution hunters make to environmental issues. The European hunters' call should be viewed both as an offer of strong support to European institutions and as a request and encouragement to change current policy.
The collected signatures highlight and emphasise the collective voice of the European hunting community, their position on sustainable hunting, and their commitment to restoring nature and promoting hunting as an important cultural heritage. Virginijus Sinkevičius spoke about the importance of hunters' work in nature conservation and FACE's support for the Nature Restoration Regulation.
Before the meeting with the Commissioner for the Environment, the collected signatures were displayed in the European Parliament. This took place at a critical time for European nature policy. One of the SignforHunting demands is to ensure that EU nature legislation delivers results for small game ecosystems and habitats, particularly wetlands and agricultural land. Next week, members of the European Parliament's Environment Committee will vote on this important legislation. FACE considers its proposal significant because the focus of European nature conservation is not on species protection and protected areas, but on habitat restoration, which is a key factor in restoring biodiversity. This is something FACE has been calling for for several decades.
