Following the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, published in May 2020, and its goal to define, map, monitor and strictly protect all remaining primary and old-growth forests in the European Union, the European Commission, within the framework of and with the support of its Working Group on Forests and Nature, began developing the relevant guidelines.
