NASA scientists have estimated that the volcanic eruption in Tonga on 15 January was equivalent to more than 100 Hiroshima atomic bombs. Using data from satellites and ground-based observations, researchers calculated the force of the eruption. Factors taken into account included the volume of rock displaced by the volcano, the estimated height of the eruption, and other variables.
