Emissions from peat extraction likely to be offset by tree planting

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development confirmed to Latvijas Radio that the sector is not truly at risk. However, a strategy must be ready by 2026 on how to offset emissions caused by extraction.

...

“The pine is the tree that best absorbs CO2. Therefore, it balances out reclamation scenarios with emission matters.”

Here, Latvia can demonstrate to the whole of Europe a unique approach to how resources can be used very effectively. We have not done anything hasty, like Germany and the Netherlands, which liquidated their peatlands and built their prosperity [on that],” notes Uldis Ameriks (LaFlora).
