On 7 February, the responsible Latvian services received information about an oil spill from the Būtiņģe oil terminal in Lithuania. Following the spill, two areas of pollution measuring 0.24 km² and 0.06 km² were identified in Latvian marine waters. It has been calculated that the total amount of oil that reached Latvian territory was 0.09 m³, or 90 litres. Given the weather conditions, it was not possible to collect the pollution at sea.
As a result, the damage caused to the environment was calculated at €9,106.37. At the same time, the company must also compensate the losses incurred by the Latvian state in responding to the pollution. Accordingly, the Naval Forces of the National Armed Forces of Latvia will be reimbursed for the costs of surveying and monitoring the site of the pollution, which came to a total of €823.31.
AB “Orlen Lietuva” will compensate the calculated environmental damage and the losses caused to the Latvian state. As reported, on 7 February at the Būtiņģe oil terminal in the Baltic Sea, owned by the oil refining company AB “Orlen Lietuva”, a tanker's mooring buoy line snapped, causing a hose connection to come apart and 1,400–1,800 litres of oil to spill into the sea. At the scene, a Lithuanian Naval Forces search and rescue vessel collected around two cubic metres of the water-oil mixture, but part of the pollution also reached Latvian waters.
