Changing climate has affected North America's largest rainforest, harming salmon

The largest remaining rainforest in North America can be found in south-east Alaska. It is a largely pristine ecosystem that stretches for about 2,000 km from north to south and has sequestered a relatively large amount of carbon.

In this region, it is possible to store around 1,000 tonnes of carbon per hectare in both biomass and soil. Although the rainforest is located far from areas of active human activity, researchers have concluded that it is also affected by the negative impacts of climate change. Glaciers are melting faster than in other parts of the globe, and winter snow is turning into winter rain. This, in turn, alters the temperature of river currents, which can affect the salmon living in them, while changes in soil temperature can lead to forest dieback.
