Last week, the Ministry of Agriculture held an off-site event to familiarise interested parties and media representatives with forest management processes, providing information on current regulations as well as the objectives of upcoming amendments aimed at ensuring sustainable forest management policy.
It is envisaged that the regulatory amendments will apply only to private forests, which account for half of all forests in Latvia. State forest territories will remain unaffected, as forest management processes in state forests are governed by entirely separate legislation. Furthermore, these amendments are tentatively expected to apply to only 10% of private forests, or 5% of the country's total land area. These conditions place an obligation on forest owners to regenerate forest areas within a shorter timeframe using high-quality planting material—whereas currently no such obligation exists, and regeneration can occur through natural processes in felled areas.
