Rīga is one of seven cinereous vultures released into the wild in Bulgaria. The "Vultures Back to LIFE" project team releases captive-bred vultures into an artificial nest installed in a tree, allowing them to acclimatise to their new environment until they are ready to make their first flight. Rīga is a bird from the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) network; she was donated to the project by Riga Zoo in 2018. Rīga will be four years old in May.
Thanks to a GPS transmitter, Rīga regularly sends signals about her location, which the project team has been monitoring for several years.
It is now known that Rīga has settled in Greece. The female vulture, which was released into the wild in Bulgaria, has found a mate, and the pair have started nesting in the Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli National Park.
