This autumn, two bears caused quite a stir in Northern Latvia by visiting several homesteads. To ensure public safety, the adolescent bears were sedated and relocated, though one of them returned. Nature enthusiasts nevertheless gave the furry visitor another chance to mend its ways. Where are the bears currently staying, and has anyone spotted them?
In the Valka municipality, the bears rummaged through waste bins in search of food, overturned beehives, climbed plum trees and did not even shy away from trying to open house doors. After being sedated and relocated, one of the bears has not been seen since, while the other returned to homestead yards after some time. It was captured using a cage trap and taken to a forest tract in the Alūksne municipality. To identify the animals, they have been fitted with special yellow ear tags.
