Last year, nature conservation in Latvia celebrated its 110th anniversary. The foundations for this field were laid in June 1912, when Moricsala was granted the first status of a specially protected nature territory. Many significant natural assets in Latvia have been preserved thanks to the implementation of nature conservation practices, including the establishment of 658 specially protected nature territories covering ~18% of the country's land area, where the natural values found are rare not only on a Baltic scale but also across Europe.

Alongside annual funding from the state budget, the Agency has implemented more than 50 projects since its 2009 reorganisation, attracting an additional 75 million euros for nature conservation, of which ~70% is funding from foreign funds. Even now, several of the Agency's major activities are possible thanks to co-financed projects from various funds.
